It seems these files are being used, but so far I don't think I've seen any
compelling and strong reason why users can't switch to one of the other builds
instead.

I have however delayed the decision date for doing anything (if something is
to be done) until the feature window opens again. See PR and discussion here:

I'm also proposing we remove the "scary warning" from the cmake build to
rather encourage users to use and improve that build:
